Dental Services – Teeth Whitening
Tooth whitening (or bleaching) is a simple, non-invasive dental treatment used to change the color of natural tooth enamel. It is an ideal way to enhance the beauty of your smile. Having whiter teeth has now become the number one aesthetic concern of most patients; as a result, there are a number of ways to whiten teeth.
Reasons for Teeth Whitening
- Fluorosis (excessive fluoridation during tooth development)
- Normal wear of outer-tooth layer
- Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, etc.) or food/drink (such as coffee, tea, wine, etc.)
- Yellow, brown-stained teeth
Treatment Options
- Over The Counter Bleaching Strips
- Prescription-Strength Bleaching Strips
- Whitening Trays with Bleaching Gel
- In-Office Whitening
Since tooth whitening only works on natural tooth enamel, prior to bleaching, it is important to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, etc. Replacement of any restorations will be done after bleaching, so they will match the newly-bleached teeth. Tooth whitening is not permanent. A touch-up maybe needed every several years, and more often if you smoke or drink coffee, tea or wine.
In-Office Bleaching
The most popular method for teeth whitening is an in-office tooth whitening system that will whiten teeth dramatically. The Zoom!® In-Office Whitening System uses proprietary technology to whiten your teeth an average of eight shades* in about one hour while you relax at your dentist’s office. The convenience of Zoom!® in comparison to days of using strips or wearing trays makes it the perfect choice for the busy individual.
Take-Home Bleaching
There are two ways to do take-home whitening:
Prescription-Strength Bleaching Strips
With technological advancements, we are now able to deliver to our patients whitening strips that will deliver the same results as the tray system that has been used for decades. Unlike over-the-counter strips made by prominent toothpaste manufacturers, these strips will stick to your teeth and allow you to go about your day as normal. Simple, Easy and Effective!
Whitening Trays with Bleaching Gel
This type of bleaching procedure usually requires two visits. At the first appointment, impressions (molds) will be made of your teeth to fabricate custom, clear plastic trays. At the second appointment, you will try on the trays for proper fit (adjustments will be made if necessary). The trays are worn with special whitening solution either twice a day for 30 minutes or overnight for a couple of weeks, depending on the degree of staining and desired level of whitening. It is normal to experience tooth sensitivity during the time you are whitening your teeth, but it will subside shortly after you have stopped bleaching. You will receive care instructions for your teeth and trays.
